eTourism - a look into the Future!

On 29th April 2008 South West Tourism hosted an event funded by the South West Regional Development Agency entitled eTourism – A look into the Future!

The purpose of this event was to pull together all tourism stakeholders and to look into the innovations in online technologies and infrastructure to enable us as Destinations, Destination Management Organisation’s and Regional Tourist Boards to further increase the awareness of what we offer visitors.

I hosted and facilitated the event and also decided to film the event so that the messages being presentetd could be re-heared by delegqates and also spread to a much wider audience to include those that weren;t abel to attend.

All the videos can be accessed here: www.swtourism.co.uk/etourism.

The videos are unqiue in teh way that not only do they film the rpesenter then all diaplys the slides as the rpesenter talks through their presentation. This servcie was provided by 2.0 Ltd - check out their website for more info.

First off congratulations to South West Tourism for starting Etourism. UK tourism operators are in many cases "struggling" to attract bookings in sufficient numbers to achieve real profitability and to indicate the way the business has changed I was amazed this last week to hear a tourism officer talking on local radio in Exeter about June being a "shoulder month". Sadly this is true for some of our resorts but with some innovative and creative thinking we can reverse the trend as technology has given us a whole new way of marketing our Tourism products.
I have recently launched www.video4tourism.co.uk to try and persuade tourism businesses to use the power of visual images with video email. I retired from active business life some 8 years but having seen what can be done with video email technology and the incredible low cost streaming video packages that can now be bought I got back into harness as I truly believe that video email can revolutionise the UK tourism industry. It really is very easy for virtually any tourism destination to use a high quality video on web sites and in email and the video content can probably be obtained at zero cost if the local Councils will get involved. Its all about innovation and our packages include a a "live broadcasting" facility so anybody can broadcast to the world. Take any County with a World Heritage site. A "live broadcast" can easily be set up to a world wide audience to "sell" the heritage site in a totally innovative way not only with live presenters but incorporating slide shows of images, logos, and text and the presenters can even take questions from viewers. Any broadcast can be archived for later viewing with directional links on any web site. We are competing in a world wide market against competitors with huge budgets. If we are to secure our share of the tourism market we have to provide the customers with more information and as Matt says on Etourism4u 80% of people searching the web are looking for video. We can ensure every web site could have top quality video content streamed to customers and again we believe this could be done at zero cost to operators.Nothing beats the power of the visual image and nothing we have ever seen is so capable of revitalising the UK tourism industry as the advances we have recently seen in technolgy. UK tourism operators and UK destinations have never been better placed to capitalise on the advances in technolgy which in other aspects of commerce are totally and without doubt proven to work but will those reponsable for destination marketing take up the challenge? Only time will tell.
